22 January 2010, Fort Lauderdale, FL: The International Superyacht Society (ISS) and The International SeaKeepers Society are proud to announce their collaboration in presenting a talk with one of Cuba’s leading marine ambassadors, Commodore Diaz Escrich. The event, The Future of Cuba’s Maritime Heritage & Maritime Resources with Commodore Diaz Escrich of the Marina Hemingway, is being held at the Eden Roc, 4525 Collins Avenue, Miami, Florida on 11 February 2010 from 5:30-6:15 p.m. and is sponsored by Moore & Company and CubaSeas.com. Commodore Díaz Escrich

Commodore Díaz Escrich grew up in Santiago de Cuba. His father, a yacht club member, served in the US Navy, and his love for things nautical greatly influenced his son, José Miguel. Growing up, young Díaz Escrich knew he wanted to become a naval officer, but those not yet 18 years old did not get into the Cuban Naval Academy. Instead, at age 16, Escrich joined his country’s Army, hoping eventually to gain acceptance into the Naval Academy. Was a lost city really found off the coast of Cuba?

In late 2001, a Canadian research company, Advanced Digital Communications, discovered what seems to be a sunken city off the western coast of Cuba. The structures were found nearly 2000 feet below the surface and appear to be built more than 6000 years ago. The company submerged robotic exploratory equipment to film footage of the buildings. Research is still in progress today to learn more about Cuba’s own “Atlantis.” To learn more about the lost city, go here.

How is the Scuba diving in Cuba? Are there many locations?

Favored by a pleasant climate and its strategic geographical position, Cuba is surrounded by a transparent sea.  It has 5,746 kilometers of irregular coastline which includes more than 200 bays and some 600 kilometers of beaches. All 300 natural beaches are characterized by warm, crystal-clear waters and sands of varied texture and color.  Interestingly, Cuban beaches and keys have a characteristic that sets them apart from others in the Caribbean. In most cases, they are protected by coral reefs, which such protection facilitating the practice of water sports.  Many of these great beaches are located on virgin keys and islets.

What ever happened to Hemingway’s famous yacht “Pilar”?

Returning to Key West from an African safari in 1934, Ernest Hemingway stopped off in New York to take a few meetings. At one with the editor of Esquire, Arnold Gingrich, Hemingway was given a $3300 advance for some short stories. He promptly took himself out to Coney Island to the Wheeler Shipyard and used the cash as down payment on a customized yacht. Wheeler was known and rewarded for producing exceptional hand-crafted wooden boats.
